I recently upgraded from 3GB memory to 8GB and it crashes anywhere from starting up to the desktop to browsing the internet.

Are you sure its running at the right speed/Timing and voltage? Plus are you sure your board supports 8gb? What motherboard do you have and what memory did you get?

According to Dell, my laptop (Inspiron 1545) only supports up to 4GB; however, Crucial says the my laptop can support up to 8GB. I bought an 8GB kit from eBay 2x4GB from ram-upgrades. The brand seems to be AXL.

Looks like it only supports up to 4gb. What did you get, two 4gb. sticks. If so, try each stick by itself and see if it runs. If so then your over its limit. Another problem you might have even testing each stick. If it only has two slots and a 4gb. limit, each slot might only support a 2gb. stick, if so it wont even run with one stick.

It runs with one 4GB stick, I tried that a few minutes ago. It's also running pretty stable at 5GB RAM. One of the 4GB sticks and the original 1GB stick that I had.

Edit: Any other suggestions?

well, if its stable at 5GB keep it at that. at least you know have a few backup RAM sticks if one of them break, which is always nice to have

With one stick in, go into the bios and see if it has it set to the default Speed/Timing and voltage of the new memory. If you dont know how, install CPUz and check the memory tab. Do you know what the default Speed.Timing and Voltage is support to be with the new memory? What memory did you get?

I'm not sure what you mean. I currently have one of the new 4GB sticks in and the original 1GB stick in. I downloaded and installed CPU-Z and I took a screenshot of the memory information: http://i.imgur.com/kYk1s.png

If you have any further instruction, I'd be happy to follow.

Is the memory you installed, DDR2 800 with 6-6-6-18 timing? Is so look under the SPD tab and see what the voltage is suppost to be at 400mhz. It should show what brand and model memory it is under the SPD tab too.

I ran memtest86+ the other night and let it pass through 6 times. It found 0 errors. Both of the new RAM sticks were in.

Since your running more memory then thats actually supported. I have no idea if a laptop has it, but look in the bios and see if you can bump the memory voltage up to 1.85V/1.90V.

I currently have the latest updated version of the BIOS for my laptop and there doesn't seem to be any option in the BIOS to increase the memory voltage. Is there any software that can do that?

Edit: Something I found out with SiSoftware Sandra (I don't know whether it matters or not..) about the timings:

The 1GB RAM module has timings of 5-6-6-18 4-24-6-3.
The 4GB RAM module has timings of 5-6-6-18 3-24-6-3.

Those are the standard timings at 400MHz. Could that be causing it? And if so, is there a way that I can change the timings?
