Recession Price Laptop Recommends

DontKnow

I don't know much about computer specs but I need one that's affordable and performs reasonably well. Or should I keep the old one I got this month?

Price range I like is between $500 to $600. But $500 is best.
Uses youtube, google video, online computer games, random web pages

Current laptop is Dell Inspiron 1501. Processor is Mobile AMD Sempron 3500+ 1.80 GHz. Memory (RAM) is 446 MB. System type is 32-bit Operating system. Battery last for 2 hours but seems like it isn't even 1 hour.
--------------
It takes 3minutes to start up 90% or so. The remaining 10% is Norton Protection Center that takes 2 more minutes to start up on computer. It takes 15 seconds or so for Firefox to open after computer is first started. Sometimes after computer first started the browser becomes unresponsive for 30 seconds or so. It's really frustrating when the browser becomes unresponsive for a minute at times. I learned Windows Vista takes up 12GB out of 64GB so 18.75% of memory storage is wasted on Vista.

Should I get a different laptop from my current one? And What is that one? Or is my old one okay despite some of my difficulties?

Thanks for having a look.

I choose base on spec, not brand.

Under $500 (I think these are with 32bit windows)

Since you haven't details what online game you are playing, I just assume it do not demand a lot on graphic. The $550 HP one seems offer good value. but I don't know if 250GB HDD enough for you. You may want to get something with a bigger hard drive.

Regarding to your old laptop. i would expect a boost in perfrom from AMD Sempron 3500+ to T6600.
If you want to keep that, first thing to do is add more RAM to it. Get 2x 1GB DDR2

Battery - Buy battery if you really want to keep your old machine. Remember to take out your battery if you plug with main when you using it at home.

Norton usually need a lot of resource to run. If you getting anti-virus programme in future, get something like KASPERSKY, Bitdefender. Or if you after free anti-virus, avast is a good one.
Run CCleaner regularly, it can help you run the machine a bit smoother.

I got a compaq laptop last year. I'm at work so I don't the exact specs.... it has an AMD dual core processor, 2.0 GHz, 3 GB ram, 320 GB hdd, Vista, for $350 at best buy. ($50 mail in rebate I think it had). You should be able to get a very nice laptop for $500.

I play games on this thing all the time and have never had an issue.

Check out a few places and compare specs/prices. If you find one you think is a good deal, google some reviews for it. Or ask here.

Good luck.

Also, if you can wait, there should be some good deals coming up due to the Holidays. Either "Black Friday" or after Christmas.

I'd hold off until the holiday sales kick in. You can probably find a killer deal come after Thanksgiving time. That is if you live in the USA.

Yeah, just the 2 gig of ram will make a huge difference to your system, depending on what online games you're doing, this could be all you need to spend at all.
