Hi everyone,

Lemme start with a little bit of history:

My computer has been having problems with overheating for the past month. Thanks to the you helpful guyz, I was informed of thermal paste. I applied Artic Silver 5 and my computer stopped showing temps of 80+. I stopper having frequent restarts (though touching the case, I could still feel above average(?) temperature).

Now today, I was playing FIFA game and the compter just shut off. And would never start again. Since I have 2 other computers, I started experimenting with PSU's. One thing that is 100% clear is that my PSU is gone. It just won't work. Used my comp with the other PSUs and it is working ok.

Now plz guyz.........recommend me a very good/economical PSU. Please give me any number of names you can....would help! (I live in Toronto).

I have got a few in my mind. Please tell me if one of these will be ideal or something else is better:

P4 3.00Ghz.
1.5 GB Ram (spread on 2 sticks)
2 Maxtor hard drives (120gb and 80 gb)
1 DVD writer
1 CD writer
1 floppy drive
1 agp video card (ATI 9200 SE) -- but might wanna upgrade to a better one
O/S - WinXP SP2 (directX 9) ----- but might wanna try VISTA

I play games all the time; but surely am not a high end gamer (as you can see from my current video card).

n.b. By the way, I have a slight sensation that those PSU's listed above might be too high end for my needs !!?!

All more than you need.

The FSP Saga AX-450 is one good choice on a budget. Reasonably high quality and quite sufficient for your system. The Enhance ENP-5150GH is a great option with considerably more upgrade headroom for a little more money.

I am going for the 2nd option. THE enhance one. And I am going to buy from the same website link that you provided = directcanada.com

But may I ask one question.

Though I have heard that this ENHANCE is the same as the Silverstone (which is very good), somewhere I read that the Silverstone would come with 3 year warranty while the Enhance...........(???)

There is a $17 price difference (only) between these at DIRECTCANADA.

Which one would you recommend for me (do you know about the warranty info on each)? I couldn't find really...at DIRECTCANADA.COM

For my money I would much rather have the Antec 550 watt TRIO

with the trio you get a "real" rating of 50C temps
active PFC
85% efficiency (which just may prove to be very useful if your processor is a precott P4????? the precott will be giving your PSU plenty of heat :eek:

all for about $25.00 or less that would be the best upgrade you will buy for a while, the diff in those two units is well worth $25.00 more >>>>>> night and day performance and quiet running too

If you're going to spend the full $100, I'd much rather have the Corsair I linked to. A full quality Seasonic platform rather than the cut down version Antec are using.

These few posts have been very helpful and I am on my last step of decision making.

Lemme list 3 (previously commented) PSU's, their prices (lowest in toronto) and their warranty. Also some info on what I do/don't care about. Please make the FINAL pick for me. Tomorrow I will buy one of these 3 after your reply.

Now.....Modular would be nice/but not necessary for me. And aesthetics is what I DO NOT care at all about.

Now please name me one of the above (considering my system specs and room for improvement as well as quality for the cost) -- the FINAL CHOICE :)

Bought Corsair. Spent the first few minutes looking, touching and smelling it. SWEET!

Now first a simple question. Then a very serious problem.

1, It can only be installed two ways so that the screws (and the switch) face outside. I am pretty sure the big fan on the PSU should face downwards towards the motherboard. But I wanna confirm this. The only other way the fan could face it upwards towards the case top (cramped!). My last supply had fan facing outside (why i am concerned with this.....will be understood when you see my next question).

2, My computer used to HEAT UP like CRAZY with the old PSU which finally burnt from overheat, i guess. Now with this EXCELLENT corsair........I used my computer only for 40 minutes and it heats up like crazy! The whole case is almost too hot to touch especially just above and behind the POWER SUPPLY.

The Speedfan stats below were taken right now! As you can see from the link, I have already applied Artic Silver 5 which did show SOME RELIEF TEMPORARILY.

Please help me with this HEATING PROBLEM. Otherwise my CORSAIR is gonna BLOW UP very soon.

I don't know what is causing this. I could certainly apply the ARTIC SILVER again (i did it about 2 weeks ago). What else to do?

(the temps on the speedfan will keep on increasing if I don't switch off my computer.what a mess.)

It sounds like something isn't doing it's job, check if all the fans are spinning when the PC is on. The fan should face downwards as it then extracts hot air through it and out of the back. For example the hottest part of my case to touch is the PSU, which is only warm.
 
you're correct about the installation. The fan should be pointing towards the mobo.

As for your temperatures, you shouldn't rely solely on your psu fan to exhaust air. adding a few case fans should help to alleviate this problem.
 
Are you sure there cannot be any other reason for this?

I have changed power supply; have applied paste (could try that again).

Also I have a nice big (as big the PSU fan) fan on my motherboard as well. Both fans are working fine too.

So what else could be the reason?

Or is it conclusive that I should add 1 (or more) more fan to the room crampy motherboard?
 
You need fans on your case, not your motherboard. There's plenty of other possibilities as well, though.

  1. Make sure all your fans are dust free.
  2. Make sure your fans are pointing in the correct direction (e.g fan at the back blowing out, etc...)
  3. Make sure that airflow outside your case is unimpeded (e.g. it's not in a tight confined space, etc...)
  4. Try to balance the number of intake and exhaust fans.
  5. Make sure all your fans are spinning at full/high speed if you're using a fan controller or similar device.
  6. Try to ensure that there is an airflow path within the case. E.g. tuck excess cabling out the way, etc...

I took the case out of the space where it was. And then opened one side of the case. In that way, it does NOT get hot.

That's very good news in itself. Atleast I now know, it is not some other problem.

I will figure out now.......where to keep the cup permanently (and whether to leave it open or find some sieved covering.
