Recommend CPU for first build: PC mag's $500 gaming PC

I'm planning to build my first computer and to follow the step by step instructions in PC mag's article "Build a Gaming PC for $500" (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2394156,00.asp)

The processor they list (AMD Athlon II X4 640) is out of stock everywhere I've checked. All the other parts I've either got already or they are on their way.

So I need a processor that will work with the Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 motherboard.

Should I keep trying to find the AMD Athlon II X4 640 processor? Or should I substitute something else and if so what?

My son and I are building this together as a father/son project. The main goals of this project are (1) to teach my son (and me!) about the components and how they fit together, and (2) to get the satisfaction of actually building a computer that works. This is why I wanted to use the exact components listed in the article.

take a look at ebay for the athlon you were planning on buying. Your only option for getting it will be used.

You can use a Phenom II x4 if you wanted to. Also a FX6100 might me a good option, but it is not recommended.

Thats really awsome man. My step-dad helped me build my first computer, and its one of the few things we ever did together. As we did not ever really get along.

See if there is a micro center near you, you can get a 6100 or a 960t with that motherboard and then get 40 off buying them together.
