In a previous thread I mentioned how my hard drive just stopped working after a year of use. Fantastic. Out of warranty too. It was a 160GB 7200RPM Seagate. I'm not sure what the cache size was, though.

I'm primarily a gamer, so what should I be looking for in my new HD? What would be the best bang for my buck?

You could get a raptor but IMO you're better off going for a similar drive to what you had. Something that's inexpensive, decently fast (pretty much any 7200RPM drive :P) and has a good amount of capacity. Basically, any 7200RPM drive unless you really want a raptor.

Thanks for the suggestion, the HD arrived today and my motherboard recognizes it. Hurrah!

I sent for the system restore discs and they'll be arriving in short order. That said, I've never installed an OS from scratch before. Is it relatively easy? Do I just follow the prompts? Is there anything I should watch out for? It's going to be XP Professional.

Related note: I still get the Disk Boot Error when I load my comp, but I assume that is because my HD is empty and there is nothing to boot with right now, as opposed to when there was a physical malfunction with my drive.

Yeah, it should say no system disk or some such. Installing XP is pretty easy, it walks you though the install and it's straight forward enough.

Seagate is crap! Western Digital is reliable. Very low crash rate. Had one for 6 years and abused it, really. Remember to always back-up. I got lazy and learned the hard way.

Seagate is fine, as is WD. Generally when someone has a drive fail on them or maybe the got a DOA drive and they decide the company is garbage and wont buy from them anymore.
