Recommendations for a newbie system

I am sick and tired of the Dell desktop I have, I am only looking for a pc that I can do simple stuff with. I use my pc for surfing, email, keeping pics, and downloading music mostly. I do need plenty of storage space as my GF and her daughter use the pc for schoolwork as well.

I would like to hear ideas for a system, relatively economic but dependable.
I keep a great deal of music on there, I imagine that a 60GB would more than enough space.

thanks

Hey

If gaming is not what you would be what you do, then I would recommend an AMD system of the following:

Athlon 64 3000+ (Socket 939)
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L160P0 - 160GB 8MB (Or any other 160GB disk)
An Nforce4 motherboard (No ultra needed)
A Nvidia Geforce 6600 (not GT)
512MB of RAM

I have included a 160Gb disk because the difference between 80Gb and 160GB in terms of price is minimal and therefore worth it. You could create a partition on the HDD into 3 sections so that each of you would have your own. Now, the processor and the rest are a bit over what you really need but definitely worth it when you consider its usability in the future.

Try emachines, they are relatively inexpensive and pretty reliable. You can even get them refurbished from tigerdirect.com. You might also check newegg.com As far as hard drive space goes, big dirves are not very expensive, so it wouldnt hurt to get 100+ GB.

The system that jan suggested would be great but if your on a strict budget you definetly don't need the 6600 graphics card. Go for an ATI 9600 or similar. Depending on what speed you need vs. price you could go for an older Athlon XP or even a Sempron. The XP won't have support for 64 bit apps and is an older technology but it will handle what you want to do fine. Besides 64 bit apps being a standard is still far into the future. With a Sempron you would definetly notice less performance but when you can get a 2200+ for $15 it is worth a look at.

Lol

Yeah...or an even better investment would be the NEW Semprons that will arrive for Socket 754 which will be 64bit. They are supposed to be cheap and would be future-proof. Then he could get an Nforce4-4x based motherboard with a card like the 6200 or something if games are not going to be what the pc could occasionally be used for. That could make a decent system.

Alternatively, he could choose an Nforce 3 chipset based motherboard with an AGP slot and spill out some money on a cheap AGP card. However, in terms of future usability and upgradability, I would lean towards the first suggestion that I have made in the above paragraph.
