Recording mic audio to my pc

Ok me and some of my buddies want to mess around and try to make some songs just for some fun and something to do while were bored, but my question is what do i need to have mic audio thats recorded to my pc to be nice clear and so you can actually hear it? What hardware or software would i need?

I don't know what kind of quality you want, but before you go buying anything I'd test out any mic you have lying around and use Audacity to record it. If that's not good enough for you I'd look into a better microphone.
