recover data from hard drive

HELP!!! i have a gateway laptop with win 98 that has a crashed hardrive..... i can open it in dos format and access the directories and i would like to recover some if not all the files that are on this drive......how can i do this? I have anew toshiba laptop with win xp pro...can i open the old drive as a slave to my new one and if so how do i do it? i have been told lotsa different things but i need a sense of direction here.....i really need my quicken files for tax time and a few photos that i would not like to lose....mainly the quicken stuff....
 
get a recovery program like "recover my files" and use it to search the drive....it takes a little while but it finds about 90% to 99% of the files
 
praetor...can you be more specific...sounds like a good idea if it works..... i found converter cables online......hook it to serial port on crashed laptop and then usb on good laptop and open drive as a slave? will this work?
