Recover over written file.

I have saved over file and I would like to recover previous version, is excel file and I am using win7. Have tried searching for previous versions on hard drive, also no option when I try properties/previous version.

Please help this very silly user.....

Once you save the new version over the old, its gone.

If the file was overwritten by some other file on the SAME sectors on the hard disk drive then the file is probably gone forever.
However if the file which overwrote the original file was SMALLER then you might have a chance of getting the file back or at least the part of it since not ALL the sectors on which the original file was stored were overwritten by some other data.

I recommend you to try Pareto Logic Data Recovery.

C:\Documents and Settings\ {User Name} \Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

For files with the XAR extension.

Make a copy of each and change the extension to xls.

Cross your fingers that one of them is the file you need!

If not, search your systems for any files with the ".XAR" extension - repeat.

Pareto Logic Data Recovery is not free, I'll recommend this powerful yet freeware called PhotoRec(together with TestDisk), may help get someone relieve, hah. Regards.
