I am looking for software that will help recover data

from a damaged partition.
Whether it is free or not, ghost doesn't seem to work, and I am trying to recover the partition first then the data.

Is the damaged partition your boot partition? If so, go with g25's suggestion, get a Linux distro on a live CD and copy the files over, or if you have XP installation CD boot into recovery console and it lets you do the CheckDisk/whatnot tricks. If not, CheckDisk should do the trick, unless the drive/partition doesn't appear at all or says it needs reformatting, in which case you're probably done for.

It does not have a operating system on it. It's an external HD, and has over 500gb of stuff on it that needs to be copied over to another hard drive. The guy would transfer it from computers and x-box. Then one day he couldn't access it. It reads as a "RAW" system. But the information is still there. I'll run these programs and see if I can get the data off of it.

It says it needs to format the drive. It's a long shot I'm trying a program that will recover the partition.
Zero Assumption Recovery 8.3

It takes like 8 hours so I let you guys know what it did.

When a filesystem is RAW,in most cases you need to format it, then start your recovery process. You can recover with the partition being raw also.
with what Cohen mentioned, you can get your data, also i use Ontrack Recovery which is free, never failed me at any one time

Boot a live Linux cd and copy everything over to an external hdd.
the FS is raw bro, linux live won't be able to read it
