long story short i deleted something i wasn't supposed to. smarty uninstaller said there was a broken installation and i decided to force delete that particular file. deleting it caused xp not to boot. no worries as i anticipated the worst and had xp ready for the repair.
after repairing xp i noticed that my desktop looked like that of a clean install. i thought the "repair" deleted all my files but while searching through c:\ and program files i noticed that all my old programs were there. i then go to documents and settings and was able to find my old stuff all intact.
funny thing is i'm logged in as DAVID. i'm the admin. however, under documents and settings there are 2 folders. one has DAVID. the other has DAVID.HOME . david.HOME is new and was created during the recovery.
it turns out that i'm using DAVID.HOME although my login name is DAVID.
for example the properties of the "my documents" folder on the desktop is:
C:\Documents and Settings\david.HOME\My Documents
how can i get back david and not use david.HOME. most of my programs are registered to david and not david.HOME.
i've tried going into control panel to switch users but i'm using DAVID. there are no other users. log out/in does nothing.
this is boggling me as i've done numerous repairs before but this is the first.
