I have an hp pavilion that needs to have a recovery disk run. Buying the disk is a lot cheaper than buying the service and I was wondering how difficult it is to do if I've never done something like this before?

The HP support will see detailed instructions for creating your own set of recovery disks there. The instructions will go over what the disks will seen burned to them from the recovery partition on the hard drive itself according to the serial number and other production information stored there binding them to that machine alone.

The information for an XP system is seen at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph08097

For Vista the information on this is seen at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00882383

Since Vista is the newer larger version of Windows you will need a dvd burner if you don't have one now.
