recycle bin

hi, first time on this forum. Need help please. After alot of trouble with a vicious virus i had my hard drive completly wiped clean. After reinstalling Windows XP successfully i cant get into my recycle bin. When i clink on, the correct page comes up, but it wont let me do anything. Any advice please, regards, David
 
Are you sure it was completely wiped or was a repair install done? Did this problem start right after it got wiped or has it been awhile ago? Maybe it was a bad install.
 
you could try this

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
4. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 3, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, and then press ENTER.
6. Click the new {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} key that you created in step 5.
7. In the right pane, double-click the (Default) entry.
8. In the Edit String dialog box, type Recycle Bin in the Value data box, and then click OK.
9. Close Registry Editor.

or you could go to start > run > type cmd > then type chkdsk and let windows find any errors and fix them

Thanks for your reply, will try what you suggest
 
If your running Norton they use a protected recycle bin. Some other apps may do the same.
Try starting in safe mode and see what happens.

There are situations where you need to reset the Recycle Bin store folder to fix problems such as Recycle Bin not showing the files that have been deleted, or you’re unable to completely empty the Recycle Bin. Each drive has a hidden and protected folder named $Recycle.bin, which is where the Recycle Bin stores files and folders that you (and other users in the PC) delete. Windows 7 creates a fresh $Recycle.bin folder automatically after you reset it.
