Red Hat? CentOS?

So I am thinking about switching from Ubuntu 11.04 due to the fact of I am just not feeling the unity anymore and I am finding more and more bugs. So I have been looking around and I am curious on Red Hat, from what I have read it seems to be one of the most stable Linux Flavors out there and also also from what I have read they do releases every two years cause I am more about the longer cycle's. The only thing I see is you have to pay yearly for it which seems expensive. Can anyone shed some more light on this or has anyone used red hat?

I have used Fedora but not a fan do to the fact it is Red Hat's test rat for new software and security updates which has been known to make it unstable. So I am looking at centOS, it seems like it shares a lot of common ground from what I have read online and if someone could answer me this is like right now it is on centOS 5, but when the os goes from 5.4>5.5>5.6 that it is just apart of your update manager and the only time you would install a fresh is when it goes from centOS 5> centOS 6?

Any light shedded on these two topics greatly appreciated.

red hat is mainly used for servers as is CentOS... centos is redhat without the support subscription and it is a bit behind on updates compared to RedHat. Fedora would be the desktop solution to redhat.

Noone ever says you have to update ubuntu to the latest and greatest whenever they realse a new version. They have a version 10.04 i think that is in LTS (long term support) so if you are happy with that you can just stick with 10.04 until it isnt supported anymore.

or you can try Linux Mint... 11 is coming out soon.

I didn't even know Red Hat was still developed. I Liked Red Hat, but the last version I used was 9.0, back in about 2002.

lol yeah they still develop it but i think 9 was the last "free" one... it went corporate after that and started using fedora as their free one.

Red Hat and centos both offer desktop edition's. My issue with Ubuntu is other then it having a lot of bugs with 11.04 that with every release. It seems like it is slowly getting heavier and more bugs with each release or at least from what I have noticed seems to be having more bugs since I started using it in 08.

I liked Fedora but damn when you use it and you pay attention to the amount of updates with it you just notice it is Red Hats lab rat for testing purpose.

I never used red hat and like said i forgot. Been around for years though. I new then they were always modifying and improving though. at least that what i heard. It was not free either. may be a free ver but the pay was better with updates. then again never used Linux either.

I know you can use them as desktops but I think they are more geared towards servers. Try out CentOS and see if you like it, I use it as a BIND and DHCP server, however i feel it is very light and works well.

That is why I suggest sticking with 10.04 it is supported until April of 2013. Or going to Linux Mint, I really like Linux Mint... I have it running on 3 laptops right now and they all work great. All version 10 and 2 of them are LXDE. 11 should be out by the end of the month.

I'm not a huge fedora fan. Before I switched to Mint I used Mandriva.

My suggestion is try CentOS or Mint... I would go with Mint it is based on Debian/Ubuntu anyway so your already somewhat familiar with apt... and they opted against unity in the latest release.

I will probably look into Mint. I have used Mint 10 before and it is really nice, will have to wait on 11 though for the fact that I am going to out to sea when the final release is coming out and I do not do Beta's when I am out to sea with no wifi :).

I am glad Mint is not going the way of Unity only for the fact that Unity is not bad but that damn bar on the side drove me nuts plus I did not like how I had to locate my application. I am starting to think Ubuntu made a mistake with the Unity cause when I was using it, it felt like I was just using one big cell phone OS.

CentOS is developed by a tiny but growing team of core developers. In turn the core developers are supported by an active user community including process administrators, network administrators, enterprise users, managers, core Linux contributors & Linux lovers from around the globe.
