Redirecting and not downloading....

Ok my problem is that recently when I have tried to get on different websites, I have been getting redirected to random, usually spam type websites, when I click on the links.
Also, when I try to download something, it loads as 0kb.
I use Mozilla Firefox and I cant seem to download IE because of the problem mentioned above.
My OS is XP SP3.
If you need any more information, please feel free to ask.

There is little doubt that you are infected in light of the behavior you are experiencing online. Two questions:

1. Are you currently behind a router?
2. What security software are you running?

* If you can access via internet download and install both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware free versions. Run and let us know what they find. Run your antivirus program.

* If you can't access the internet go to safe mode and run your antivirus.

Follow this procedure and post both logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Yes I am behind a router I believe.
And I use AVG.
I already have Malwarebytes but I can not update it without getting an error code.
I tried reinstalling it but same thing happened when it tried to update.
I am still going to run the quick scan and I can post a Hijack log if you would like me to.

Yes, go ahead and post a hijackthis log. You are getting an error because it doesn't recognize that you have an internet connection. That means you have something else besides a redirect problem.

also, and idk if this is related or not, but within the past week or so my sound no longer works in my browser.
works fine with itunes and what not but no sound in the browser on any website

Sorry about not responding quick to your log but i've been gone all afternoon working on computers.

You are infected, since you can't get malwarebytes to update please download and run combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

O don't worry about it at all I really appreciate all the help.
But, for some reason, I can not download combofix...
Whenever I try my computer freezes up and I have to manually restart it.
Because I have been experiencing problems with firefox like I said, I checked out there website and other people are having similar problems.
But any other way of downloading CF?

Run Malwarebytes withoutupdating it and see what it finds and deletes and post the log file from it along with a fresh hijackthis log.

Ok I downloaded that and ran it.
Still wont let me update malware or SAS
I also ran Malware, SAS, and AVG again last night and they found nothing.

Download rkill.exe from the link on that page. If the exe don't run then download the .com and .scr and run it and one of them should work for you. after running rkill try updating malwarebytes.

If that don't work, try downloading and running combofix again.

rkill didnt help
still getting error code 732(12029, 0), don't know if that helps you at all.
And combofix still did the same thing with freezing up my computer at the beginning of install = /

Then click on fix checked at the bottom. Then go into add/remove programs and uninstall anything that has viewpoint in its name such as media player, service, or manager. Reboot the system in safe mode with networking and then try to run combofix.

Combofix is still being a pain and freezing up my computer = /
The good news is, I was able to update both Malware and SAS.
Should I keep trying CF or do you want me to post a malware log now?
