Reducing CPU

When i load anything of importance my CPU jumps up to near 100%.
Explorer. Firefox. A game of about any kind. From Simple Infantry to WoW.
Is there any simple steps that i can take to reduce the CPU so i can get better performance out of my system?

Also how can i tell what service pack i have my my current system?

OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Basic
Version 6.0.6000 Build 6000
Processor Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz, 2792 Mhz, 1 Core(s), 1 Logical Processor(s)
Total Virtual Memory 4.19 GB (1gigDDR2 with 1gig factory)

I believe every processor goes to 100% when a program is being opened. Nothing to worry about. Go to Control Panel and System, it should say which SP you have.

Your processor is obsolete. I would say it is time for an upgrade.

Lol, I was going to say this but I figured it would be rude.
I didn't see so much an upgrade being required, more so it being inappropriate to be run on vista.
but if vista is a must, then an upgrade is a must as well.
:o

Well, as it was already said your stuff is pretty obsolete. It's not uncommon for an old single core to be pegged at 100% often.

But, we need to know what motherboard you have. If your motherboard supports hyper threading, you may be able to just get away with a CPU upgrade for awhile.

Based on the CPU you have though, I doubt it. But, if your motherboard supports 800mhz FSB and hyperthreading this CPU will solve your problems-

It's still a single core, but with hyperthreading it kinda acts like a dual core cpu. Plus it's 3.4ghz, so more speed too.

His motherboard is an original equipment manufacturer though. Do you think his system BIOS will even support a different type of processor? He would likely just be better off going with a whole new system rather than attempting fixes that would cost him money and not upgrade processing power.

Windows 7 would take a little bit of the load off of his processor, but he is playing video games. A better system is required if he wants to play the games he wants with his current system. Windows 7 would not solve his problem.

Well I think his CPU is only 533mhz FSB, so if the board only supports 533 his options are nothing really better than what he has. He would have to have hyperthreading to see any real difference over what he has now, which is the CPU I linked too....3.4ghz with HT which would be a huge improvement over what he has now, and would be plenty enough for any games that could even be played on a single core in the first place.

Yeaa but it has to be compatible, can't just pop in random CPU, ain't gonna work, Intel is not the same as AMD, Socket 775 is different to Socket 1156

The actual building the system will be a 45mins job, but make sure you relish it, I didn't :/ But fresh anti static plastic smell still is the best smell ever! hah!
