reference model for 480?

Will the rx 480 reference model suffice, or would it be worth it to wait for custom models? I already decided to sell my gtx 970 before they slash the price too much, and I'll be out of a graphics card until I get my 480. Not sure I'm patient enough to wait.
 
On second thought, I have a new question, although feel free to answer the first one as well. Should I spend the time to upgrade to a 480 from a 970 in the first place? I like having geforce experience and shadow play. I know amd has their gvr, but it creates more performance degradation than shadowplay if I'm not mistaken. Would I still get better performance while recording with the better performing gpu, even with the bigger fps drop from amd gvr compared to shadowplay?
 
What's your budget?

The typical performance benchmarks so far on the RX480 slots it right between the GTX 980 and the GTX 970 for $199 USD.

I have the money, but would it be worth getting the better gpu (for recording while playing a game) when amd's gvr drops the fps more than shadowplay does?
 
Tbh, I'm not sure how big of an impact it is for recording while playing on AMD's software. @Darren, do you have any idea?

GTX1070 is an option for you if you want to fork out $379. That will give you 980 Ti performance.

I suppose that might be an option. That's really the only beef I have with amd atm. If only the 1060 were already out, it'd solve all my problems.

EDIT: Also, where are you finding a 1070 for $379?
 
MSRP for the basic non FE 1070 is $379. You won't find many in that price range, but for those that will be priced at $379, it'll have a really basic bland generic cooler on it. Not sure any $379 version cards are made yet though.
 
Going from a 970 to an RX 480 is going to be a slight upgrade at best just based off what rumors of their performance is at. The 390 is a tad faster than the 970 and the 480 is supposed to be somewhere in the 390-390X range I think, maybe even close to the 980.

I'd suggest a 1070 if you're wanting an upgrade. If it was me I'd honestly just wait a while, upgrading cards super frequently isn't terribly economical and the 970 still is a solid performer at 1080p and even into 1440p.
 
I wouldn't bother upgrading from a GTX 970 to the RX 480 given that the performance is so similar. If you really want to see a difference you need to upgrade to something like the GTX 1080 or perhaps the Fury thing on the AMD side (which is probably due to be replaced soon anyway). :P
 
Yeah, I had already decided against selling my 970 once the benchmarks of the 480 were leaked. Came to the same conclusion you guys did, too similar. Wouldn't have been worth the upgrade.
