Reformat & Reinstall Win10 on Laptop.

My laptop is getting old and slow and have already run cclean app and virus software. I want to start clean. Is there a way to reformat it and reinstall operating system from somewhere already on the hard drive? It is too old to run Win11.

Just back up the data you'd like and throw chromeOS or Ubuntu or something on it.

My C2D laptop from 2006 chugs along pretty well with Lubuntu and a SSD.

Can you give us the specs of the laptop? You can always reset this pc but unless you have enough cpu, ram and a decent ssd its still gonna be slow.

Without loading it it's a Dell that came with Windows 10 and doesn't have hardware capable of Win11. I'll have to check when I turn it on next.

What is the service tag? you can get that in the BIOS if needed.

As long as it has the hardware requirements (I think secure boot and TPM) then you can do a clean Windows 11 installation. I just did one on a 10 year old machine.

Depending on how old it is, Dell may have the Recovery Tool on their site.

I don't see why you think a reinstall of Win 10 will help. You need to see why it's slower now. Are you low on hard drive space? That can really slow you down. Also see what apps are running in the background and if any are taking up significant memory, "End Task" them and it they kick in when you reboot, disable them.

I ran it very light. Definitely plenty of space. I reformatted and reinstalled Win10. I will boot it tomorrow to see if it's running noticeably better.

You may have a lot of files that have been deleted , but still on your system - try running wisecare 365 (Free program) to clear these, and do a defrag - more efficient than windows. There is also options to defrag your registry and other tools. There is a paid version, however I find the free version does all I need.
Check you do not have more than 2 backups stored on your system-if so remove them.

Check for unwanted programs and remove ( use windows or wisecare 365), which also checks the registry and remove links from there as well

If you need to do a 'Clean' windows install, go to 'settings'' then 'recovery', and follow the options, BE WARNED- this will remove most of your installed programs, so ensure you have the installion software to re-install them

It still runs a bit slow after reformat and Win reinstall, but doesn't lag and freeze as much if at all anymore. Probably just old hardware not keeping up as well anymore. Video streaming services seem to run much better now.

It's most likely a low end processor with only 4gb of ram and a mechanical hard drive instead of an SSD. Moving to an SSD would be much faster.
