Refresh Rate

If the only availible option under refresh rates is 60 hertz, is that just another sign my monitor is POS or do i have something set up wrong (or looking in wrong options)?

Any way i could get a higher refresh rate without buying new hardware (i would guess not).

Aww, gotta love 8 year old CRTs.

Most Crt have a higher refresh rate, Around 75-85hrz range. This is because a CRT renders the screen by sending bursts of electrons down a vaccum tube which are deflected by magnetic fields to strike the phosphor layer on the screen itself. How many times it does this is representative of the refresh rate. CRT's have been known to flicker at less than than ideal r-rates, consequently you may experience this at such a low rate. Check the Nvidia control panel. If you haven't already, install latest video drivers, and if applicable monitor/display drivers. If the monitor has a strict 60hertz refresh rate, you can't change it.

LCD monitors don't physically need refresh rates, because they use vastly different technology than CRT's, no electron guns or phosphorous layers. They are still used however, in part because todays tech is still built around a refresh rate, for example, the video cards frame buffers. [/banter end]

Could it be that my resolution is too high?

EDIT, i guess i can test this on my own...but then again, an answer would be easier :D /lazy

The refresh rate isn't independent of your resolution, however I don't believe that would be the problem. Then again, you could always lower the resolution to check, like you said.. lazy ass.

If you don't notice anything unwanted, like the flickering screen, or eye irritation, it's alright to just leave it. All it really does is repaint the screen 60 times a second, this of course caps maximun FPS in any app, but 60 is more than enough.

Usually if you have your monitor set to the highest resolution, the refresh rate will usually be between 60-65Hz, although higher end monitors have higher refresh rates.

HAHA, that took all of about 45 seconds to test.

Yes i got higher refresh rates but im not sure if i noticed any thing.
maybe a teenie tiny bit better. But i like my resolution so i guess ill just have to live with 60 hertz.

Yeah, I doubt you would notice anything. I believe the human eye can only process 24 hertz, so anything above will be unnoticeable.

Thats not true, theres is a huge difference when you look at a monitor at 60Hz vs say, 85Hz. There is lots of screen flicker and it is very hard on the eyes when running a high resolution CRT monitor at 60Hz.

Hmm... so what exactly is refresh? The number of times per second it posts a new screen? Wouldn't that usually be limited by your graphics card anyway?

"The refresh rate (most commonly the "vertical refresh rate", "vertical scan rate" for CRTs) is the number of times in a second that display hardware draws the data it is being given"

When you aren't using games and such then pretty much any graphics card can handle it.
