Refurbishing P4 systems for a small profit?

I have the chance to get my hands on 4 or 5 old dells with P4 processors. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to refurbish them for a small profit. Thoughts?
 
depends if they are a decent speed no one really want under 2ghz, also i have always found it alot easier to recase old systems into new nice looking cases
 
The dells are a pain in the butt to recase,needs custom wiring to the front panel,i know i have one and put it in a new case,lol.
But my case was $30 but it was half price and looks expensive.

But it will be hard to make any money off old computers. As the dells are worth less than $100 and you would be lucky to get $50, memory upgrades start at $30 and would not be worth it. If You you get the computers for free or really cheap,then just clean them and sell them for anything you can get.

You could also get them and part them out, the parts are worth more separately then all together.

Yeah I'll be getting them for free if I decide to. If I get them I will probably switch out the case and PSU, and maybe put 1GB of ram in.
 
On my dell for the front panel, the usb from new case will plug to the board ok,but the power+led wires from new case will need to be spliced to the wires to the board.The audio front headphone jack will also need to be spliced to the wires on the board.

On my dell computer the board only uses 19 wires plus 4 and does not use 1 wire(from plug of 20) that comes with new power supplys.You could simply remove one wire(from the new plug) that does not match the old plug.

1Gb starts at $30 per chip and board will hold 2GB max.
Heres a note:my computer with 1Gb is not any faster than when i had 500mb.

Need help let me know,i have wire diagrams for a dell dimension 2400.
 
In my opinion, its not worth it. You will not get back what you put in it, now if the processor was dual core, thats a different story. But since they are old P4's its not really worth your time and money.

Now people even without computer knowledge think that the computer should atleast be a dual core doesnt matter even if it was a Celeron Dual core.

That is true. But I had a friend buy a Sempron 145 over athlon II X2 245 just because the clock was faster.

I would still hate to pass up free computers no matter how old or new they are. They would probably be decent Ubuntu Boxes.

+1 on the ubuntu idea.
A lot of this also depends on where you are selling them. If your using Craigslist or a similar site, you may be able to get around 100 each for them. Somewhere like these forums, you wont get as much (cause we all know how old they are.).
Since you are starting from free, anything you get would be a profit.
