Registry too clean?

I have a friend that ran Registry Mechanic to clean his registry and and said when he starts his computer it acts normal and goes to a black screen. I know this has been posted before, but I couldn't find a previous one. I'm pretty sure he deleted something he needed, but I'm not too registry smart. Please direct me to the post that corrected the problem if you can find it. Thank you.

O BTW- Dell XPS Gen 3 if that helps

Did he make a backup of the registry before deleting entries from it?

you might be able to use system restore (if you can get to it before a black screen). Im not sure if they hold registry information, but its worth a try.
