reinstalling O/S

Hi I have a compaq f7oo laptop the hard drive had failed, before installing a new one I formatted it from a caddy, ntfs duly fitted it. I should say at this point that I was having some trouble with the computer not recognizing the dvd drive.
so I was using an external drive, so when I tried to reinstall the operating system from it (after entering set up and setting to install form usb disc) I get a message "boot mngr missing press cont. alt delete to restart" anyone got any ideas

Is your windows install disk one you burned or a disk from microsoft?
Try burning a Linux disk and see if it will boot from that. It could be a issue with the CD drive.

www.ubuntu.com thats the easiest to download linux (even though I have issues with them myself)
