reinstalling WinXP

Hello guys, so recently I've been helping a friend out and fixing his computer. His hdd had stopped working and its a dell store bought computer, I tried to install a copy of WinXP and it would hit a blue screen. I've asked other people about this and they had told me that I do NOT need the original dell cd for that computer but i can get around it and start "clean". any thoughts of how to actually do that? that sad thing is that the people that told me don't remember how to get through that. I don't know the specs of the computer but if needed I can ask for it. Thanks!

to reinstal windows all you need to do is to reboot your computer with the windows disk in the cd, thats if the computer is set to boot from cd first. then follow the prompts. make sure to have your windows key handy.
