I am looking to replace my 8800GTS 512mb video card.

Not sure if I should get the GTX285 or wait until the next gen comes out. Any suggestions or advice?

And how much better is the GTX295 vs the 4870x2/GTX285?

Well I like my GTX 295 it maxes every game I have. The Hd 4870 x2 probably would to so I guess if you had a preference for a brand (either ATI or Nvidia) or budget ,you could get the Hd 4870 X2 cheaper or play at res. higher than 1920 x 1200 which I dont.

I was thinking to slightly overclock the GTX285 and play at 1920x1200. I have my 8800GTS clocks in my signature. That's at 80% fan speed. Doesn't lock up and it's a good amount higher then stock timings with stock voltage.

So does my preference look to be 4870X2 or GTX285?

Honestly Overclocking a video card Does not make to much of a difference. I have had both the gtx 285 and 295. I started out with the 285 and so it dropeed 50 bucks in pirce and rmaed it. Then got a 295. Honestly there was a significant difference between the 285 and 295 whether the 285 was overclocked or not because i did overclock that card. I got an extra 3,200 pts on my 3dmark and in crysis over 15-20fps better. In my opinion if you could fork the cash the 295 is worth it and I expierenced no compatibility issues.

I am confused though... I am reading that 8800GTS (G92) in SLi will perform similar to a single GTX295? It's mostly in 3dmark06 that you can see solid changes but how can that be?

What bigd54 said.

A GTX295 is something like 2 GTX260's in SLI that only occupy one pci-e slot. There's no way a 8800gts g92 can compare to either GTX 260 core 192 or 216.

It is defiantly worth the upgrade. Sure sli'ing your 8800gts will give you an improvment but it will most certainly not be comparable to that of a gtx 285 or 295. In the end its how much you want to spend and how much of an improvement you want.

also I notice you have a 24" monitor the newer 200 series with the extra memory really help out at those high resolutions.

Really? I did a lot of googling yesterday. haha And it seems that 8800GTS in SLi is very comparable to that of a GTX285. I just want to make sure that if I get the 285 or 295 that I will absolutely see a change over 8800GTS in SLi.

I can say for sure you will see a major improvement with a 295 but Im not sure how significant it would be with a 285
