If you have no partitions and your data/programs are not on a seperate partition then a Windows install will overwrite it.

tft,
thanks for the answer this is what it say

c:partition 1 (ntfs) 38154mb (9593 free)
unpartitoned space 8mb

78529mb disk at 1d0 on bus 0 on atapi (mbr)

d: partition1 (ntfs) 78521mb (13478 free)
unpartitoned space 8mb

i have 2 h/d's one 80gb the other 40gb
not sure if this is what you mean by partitioned
thanks again

I made the assumption you had one hard disc and maybe it was partitioned with the OS on one partition with your programs and your data on the other.

As you have two hard discs do you keep your data seperate on the second hard drive ?
and if your programs are with the OS then they will have to be installed again.

the o/s in on the "c" drive but have data on there as well so i need to back up that data then reinstall windows right?

Yes back up all your data to D:
Export any Email contacts and mail
Download a free trial of Driver Genius or similar and back up all your drivers to D: if not then make sure you download the drivers if you haven't all the discs associated with the graphics, printer, monitor etc

Be careful when you partition the drives not to accidentally delete the partition on your backup drive as you won't see the drive letter, rather you will only see the partitions identified by their size in bytes.

i eventually put windows on a spare drive i had and it works fine but in order to keep my desktop and other items i wanted to move them to the drive i just put windows on so i did a windows backup, problem is when i try to put the backup on the new drive it says there is nothing there....it took 8hrs to complete the backup and the backup folder size is 25gig
help please
