Remote desktop help set up plz?

OK so i want to set up remote desktop on my computer,

this is what i have done

1. enabled remote desktop on this computer,
2. opened port 3389

now i dnt get how to get into my comptuer via web browser(its possable right?) wen i punch in my ip it goes to my router/modem ... how do i get it to go to my computer instead of the router... my computer has a ip of 10.1.1.2 .. and my router of 10.1.1.1(lan) .. ok so even if you cant use the browser .. the same thign happens when i use the 'remote desktop connection' application. ..

someone help
 
1 = what OS , and where is your computer ?
2 = where are you yourself that you want to remote in your pc : home to work ? or work to home ?

if RPD all fails, try VNC
please give some brief description

Oh that seems really cool to have a remote control of your computer...

Can somone explains how this works? Can we put username and passwords to protect the computer?

You can control your pc over the local network or the internet.it uses RDP (remote desktop protocol) to talk to the pc sending requests.to view if your pc is controllable check the properties of "My computer" and go to the "remote" tab.To use it go "start" "all programs"-->'accessories"-->then "communication".
 
i want to use my home computer from work, and i donno wat RPD and VNC is .. im a complete noob at this .. this is how my computer connects to the net ..

from computer to switch switch to router/modem, there is also another computer on the network which connects to switch then router/modem, both computers have static ip's within LAN .. and a dynamic ip with WAN .. is that much help that'll help u help me?(lol that was kinda confusing)

oh and I'm using Vista ultimate edition .. but I run xp sp2 aswell(duel booting)
 
first off you must give your remote client a static IP, most routers have what is called static DHCP you can configure the MAC address of the client to always be leased the same IP address. Then you must forward, or open port 3389, I typically give Microsoft's RDC a range of 3389 to 3390 because for some reason it seems to like those two ports.

Now, if you are a tin foil hat type person, you would probably want to do remote desktop over a ssh connection. MS claims that the connection is encrypted, but if you read into it a lot of people claim it is sloppy. I am not a security expert but I can see their points. You can download a third party app called putty, and it can create ssh connections from a windows client. ssh uses port 23 on your router, and your router has to support this.

Now, you must also always know your WAN IP which is probably dynamic so you may want to set up a dyndns account (dyndns.org) that way you can track your IP. You can also set up dyndns in your router if it also supports it.

then you just launch the remote desktop client and type in your wan ip, it should then connect and ask for authentication, and then you should be able to remote control. Performance will suck just so you know, so don't expect to stream video or even really browse the net at very high quality.
 
After forwarding the port all you should need to put in the webrowser is http://YourIP:3389 and that should work or just your IP into remote desktop on another computer, you must have your home PC on aswell lol :D
 
There is sometimes port 4125 (if I remember correctly) issue when you doing web control so you might try to open it if you still won't be able to do it.
 
MS remote desktop uses 3389, of course that can be forwarded to anything you want

is this over the internet or over a LAN?
 
I looked it up. It looks like port 4125 might cause problems if you using RWW on SBS 2k3.
So it's not your case probably.
