hi every1 i've been trying for a long time to get remote desktop to work but i have no idea how to do it...
can any1 teach me or give me specific direcitons on what to do? both sides of the computer uses wireless routers

First are you using windows XP Pro or just home on both computers?? XP Pro makes it alot easier to work with. I work for Fairfax County Government in Virginia and we use remote desktop a lot to work on pcs at our off-site facilities.

i figure u have but it dosent hurt to ask. Uve turned on the setting for remote desktop right. right click on my computer and select properties. then click the remote tab. You need to make sure both computers are allowed to recieve them. then you need to make sure u have both computer names available.

OK, well there may be a firewall on either machine. Are you getting an error message? Let me know what you see... Are these 2 pc's on the same network?

If your Windows firewall is up make sure you have Remote Desktop as an exception. To check this go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > click the Exceptions tab > Check the box that says Remote Desktop. If you do not see Remote Desktop as an option, go, click the Add a Program button and search for the following file C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe.

Also make sure the computer you are connecting to has a username with a password, otherwise it will not work.

Let me know if either of those work. If not try to give me as much detail as to what is happening (or not happening) so I can troubleshoot more effectively.

Thanks man.

the error says...

The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote conections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections.
It is also possible that the network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

i was wondering if there's anything to do with the router...
THANX

Oh... that would be it. Do you know how to make exceptions for your router? Do you know how to let mstsc.exe pass through the firewall in the router?

i have no idea how to do that... do i havta do it for both computer?
also i'm just wondering do i need the computer that i'm loggin on to's login name and password at all? cuz i don't seem to remember using it once ....

The computer you are connecting to must have a password on the username. As far as the firewall issue. It's the firewall built into your router, so you wouldn't need to change anything on the computer, just the settings of the router which will affect both machines. What type of router do you have? Manufacturer and Model #? Each router is a little different in how you set up it's exceptions, so it's best if I know which router it is to find out how to set up exceptions.

OK, here is what you're going to have to do.

First you need to find out the local IP address of the computer you want to connect to. Please go to the computer you want to connect to and find the IP address - To do this go to run > type "cmd.exe" > click "OK" > type "ipconfig" and hit enter. It will say "IP Address" write this down.

Second, you also need the Router's IP address but that can be found multiple ways. Visit here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ (if your computer is connected to the router, the routers IP address should show, not your local IP)

Third, you need to access the router's administrative console. This may get a little confusing but you need to look for something called "Port Forwarding."
Now remote desktop uses a port to connect to computers, port 3389. So you need to forward port 3389 to the local IP I had you find before (the IP of the computer you are connecting to). Now that you have done all that, start Remote Desktop, and use your router's IP address that I had you get.

Now remember, there must be a password on the computer you are connecting to.
That should be all!

Let me know if you have any problems following those directions.

this is waht i see when i try to forward
To add a server using forwarding:

1.Enter an Application name of the service you want to forward.
2.Enter the Port Range Start and End of the service you want to forward.
3.Select the protocol used by the services.
4.Enter the IP Address of the server that you want the Internet users to access.
5.Select Enabled for that entry.
6.Click the Save Settings button to save the settings.

this is what i did...
1. Remote desktop
2. start : 3389 end : i donno what ot put...
3. tcp

is that rite? and what is end? like my local port...
