Remote Desktop Question...

I dont think you have to but, remember w/o a static IP, if you reset the PC then the connection will be lost and the IP address will prob be re-assigned.

hmmm... so its probably best that I have one is what your saying?

If I assign it a static IP do I need to go back and assign all computers on the network one as well, or will it pretty much take care of itself?

Hey OP, what is it you want to do ? how is your network structure ?
you don't really need static IP to remote into a machine,DHCP is fine.

well im using my laptop as a file server but I want to be able to access it quickly if I need to install a program on it or such without physically getting to it. Both computers are working on the same workgroup if that helps any...

^^ Then your best bet is setting up a static IP so you dont have to change things later. It will save you more time and frustration in the long run.

If I setup a static IP on the fileserver do I have to set one up on all of my networked computers though?

OP, how is your network ? i mean how do you connect ? you didnt give enough information, via a modem ? router ? if so then you are DHCP, there's no need to setup static, no. Just enable remote session on the file server and select the remote users. Problem solve.
Connecting to a static IP from a DHCP machine in my experience won't work. i've tried a couple of time i didn't work, maybe am wrong there.

Srry I dont know Not very familiar with servers and such
I didn't answer to this thread cause i'd figure you'll reply back
