in my home network, i have 3 computers connected to a switch.
one of them is a media pc in the loungeroom running vista home premium.

Im trying to remotely connect to the media pc using the main home PC running XP Home (also tried using laptop with XP Pro), and it wont connect...

is there something i have to do on the media pc to be able to do this? cos im out of ideas...

do i need a separate user account on the media pc to remotely connect with?
 
Right click MY COMPUTER and select 'properties'. Then select 'remote'. Look to see that remote desktop is enabled, and that all users can use it.

You need to have at least one user on the system with a password - You cannot use remote desktop on non-password protected user accounts.

Check the computer is named well - again, under MY COMPUTER.

When connecting with the remote desktop client, either type the computers name, or the IP address.

If you want to remote access the machine from anywhere outside the LAN, you need to port forward (in your router) port 3389 to the machines IP address (and give that machine a static IP). You can then use remote desktop to access the machine from the net, using your home IP address. If you do not have a static home IP address, sign up for a DYNDNS account (google it). Put these settings into your router, and the DYNDNS name will be kept upto date with your home IP.
 
i've given up on remotely connecting from within the network... just wont work with our computers' operating systems.

but i'm intrigued to try and remotely connect to my current PC from anywhere outside of my LAN.

our setup up this:

internet ---> modem ---> router --->computer

both the modem and the router have their own IP address, which do i use?
i've signed up for a free account with dyndns.org, and i've put those details into the router... but how do i access my computer?
 
When do a remote desktop you need to either type the ip of the computer or the name of the computer.

Also with the computer you need to have an account that you log in that has password on it.

Go into your router settings with the IP you have for this, and set the port forwarding to the machine you want to access, as I have said above.

The router should be able to update the actuall WAN IP to the dyndns if you have set this up correctly.

First try to access your router from the web - look at the remote access settings in the router).

What router have you got?

As a test, goto the command prompt (Start > Run > Type cmd).

The type "ping your_dynddns.dyndns.org" (loose the " ", and replace with your address!

You should see a line which says something like "pinging your_dyndns.org[81.38.120.234]" or similar.

If an IP appears in the [ ], you know the dyndns service is presenting your IP as required.
