remote file access

I've had several instances where I've needed to access files on my desktop remotely from my iPhone. I see there are several free programs or apps available with which to perform this task.

However, I was recently 'taken/hoodwinked/f*cked over' by a website who said their product was free, only to learn that, hidden 4 pages back in hotlinks, that they would charge me $99 if I didn't cancel within a week! Lesson learned!

Do any of you perform this task, and if so, which program works best for you?

TeamViewer or logmein are your easiest bets.

If you wanted to 'go pro' in a sense you could set up an OpenVPN server and use that to connect back home. It's a lot more complex if you aren't familiar with setting up VPN access, however.
