Remote firewalls

Can someone explain to me what a remote firewall is?

Several nights this week my internet explorer has suddenly stopped working. When I've run a diagnostic it's come up with the message along the lines of that my IE connection is still working but that there's a remote firewall that is blocking it and that if I don't have access to it I should contact my internet provider.

Previously I have managed to sort it by deleting browser history, shedding unwanted files/applications etc Tonight I rang BT internet who reminded me to pull the plug out of the homehub and then plug it in again 10 minutes later, which worked.

I would however like to know what a remote firewall is, and how the hell it gets on my computer. I do of course use Windows firewall as a security measure, which works very well. But I'm a bit tired of feeling like I need to become a software engineer in order to use this thing.

a remote firewall is just that, remote, meaning that it's something to do with the server you connect to that provides your internet connection. I would venture to guess that for some reason the server your ISP uses decided it didn't like you for some reason which is why by unplugging and plugging back in (thus disconnecting and reconnecting yourself to the server) fixed the problem.
