Remotely mount drive from server

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2. I would like to mount a network drive from that server on my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T460). When I am on my home network, it is not a problem. However when I am working away from home, this is a problem.

I was thinking setting up a VPN (OpenVPN), but not sure what the best method for doing this would be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You'd need some sort of VPN to mount it securely, OpenVPN is a reasonable option that runs on most home routers. Alternatively you could set up an OpenVPN server on your LAN and port forward.
