remove symantec?

win XP prof. I get an error message "computer is at risk, anti virus is turned off" at turn on. Evidentally something is wrong with my symantec antivirus program because it's not turned off. I tried to remove it for a reinstallation but I get "access denied, can not be removed". Win removal gives the same message. I turned off symantec in the system tray but no luck, and safe mode gives the same results. I tried loading McAfee but it won't load until I get rid of symantec. There must be an easier way than a complete reformat. Please advise, mr_ed[AT]isp.com.

tried above.When I got to "do you want to download this software" I clicked yes, then got a malicious script message and the computer froze up. Appearantly a full reformat is the only option. Thanks for the interest.
