Well I'm just wondering how to fully get all of the pre loaded crap that came on my computer off , and if there's anything I have to do right off the bat..

Just want to get everything running good and updated. And ifthere is anything I can do to optimize it please let me know. This is the first computer I actually bought new where someone else ( best buy ,, yes I'm embarrassed to admit that ) hasn't removed all the stuff already

so basically let me know what you all do if you wanted to get everything cleaned up. I'm assuming removing norton is a big thing.?

Pretty much, and any of the manufacturer bloatware (such as HP Games, HP Advisor, etc)

With Norton, you need to download and run the removal utility.

gotcha, so is everything best buy tries to charge you for is in the add/remove programs?? when they say they'll clean everything out for you for $50 or whatever it is is just a crock of sh!t?

Yeah pretty much everything can be found in add/remove programs. Just don't use add/remove for norton as it will leave traces behind.

Reload Windows as soon as you get it...I have done that on a few friends computers.

Yeah - I reloaded 'Windows XP in some old HP computers - and got rid of all that crap loaded on from Dell. I don't think you can remove them all from Add / Delete function cleanly.

I'm not sure about new computers. My friend's HP PC who I helped set up of the box didn't come with disks. There was a restore function to original settings ( I think it was partitioned on the HDD ) - but not disks included. Not sure what your options are with that setup.

Most computers don't come with CDs/DVDs anymore unless you request it (which usually costs money). Instead they just throw everything onto a restore partition. For some reason I remember running the restore on a lenovo machine and it asking what bloatware I wanted... but I think that's just my memory failing there, but yes, add/remove programs will take out everything you need except Norton. Good luck.

thanks guys..

any suggestions on what i should add right away,as far as AV , anti spam, cleaners etc.?

CCleaner and nCleaner are good space utilities. Defraggler is a good defrag option.

And for AV I recommend Avast! Home. It's free - just register your emial and you'll get a key.

Exactly!! Pc's now that have Win Vista or 7 come pre-loaded and DO NOT include an install disk nor Recovery Disks. This means you must restore from either a Hidden Partition Backup or Create Recovery Disks. Only one problem with that. Both the HDD Partition and the Backup disks are preloaded with all that "junk". Therefor, the OP's best option is to use the Norton Removal tool and get rid of Norton. Then, Download CCleaner and use it to uninstall useless programs. Then run the cleaner and registry.

Edit: Then maybe use Defraggler to Defrag the Hard Drive. It should run like a champ then

You can also find a copy of an OEM XP/Vista/7 disc to use to reinstall the OS.

CCleaner will tidy up all the odds and ends that get scattered about on your computer (Temporary files and registry errors, so on) Never knew it could uninstall full programs :\ Tidy up the registry and odd ends AFTER uninstalling a program yeah. Most programs can be removed via add/remove, although I can pretty easily see that junk being tucked away after its "Removed", which may require another program.

The Microsoft Defragger is a really crappy one and takes forever. Defraggler is a very fast, free, and effective defragger.

Hmm I have had no problems with Defraggler. I defrag like Once a Month and my fragmentation always stays under %2
