Removing Icons From the Taskbar.

I know how to hide an icon from the taskbar while the program is running but is there a way to completely remove an icon from the taskbar?

Well with some applications running within your system tray (if you do mean the system tray) you can load that application up, browse through the preferences / properties and there is usually an option to check / uncheck which displays it within your system tray or not. Such features are found within Quicktime, Winamp etc.. etc..

Breaks.

yeah, i have looked thorugh all the settings but the icon still appears in the system tray. (uTorrent). Is there no way to completely remove icons from the system tray built into windows?

If you right click on your start bar and go to the following:

Right Click >> Properties >> Taskbar Tab >> 'Check' Hide inactice Icons >> Click Customise (to the right of it) >> Find the icon(s) you wish to hide, click on the 'behaviour' drop down list and select 'always hide' for those particular icons that you wish to hide.

That's one method of doing it. And of course if you wish to see the icons you select to always hide, you just click on the system tray expand button.

Breaks.

yes, I figured out how to do that but if you press the expand button on the taskbar the icon appears again. I was looking how to completely remove the icon. thanks anyway breaks.

Yeah sorry. I had a feeling you may have already ran into that option (as I noticed you did say completely remove, not hide). Thought I'd suggest it anyway just encase you hadn't :). Other than that method I have no idea. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Breaks.

is this any good to you?

found this article......
The system tray icons are midway between a service and an application and have the advantage of a UI. They are listed under the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. You can remove them; however, be aware that doing so not only removes the icon but also stops the application from performing its actions.

To remove one of these icons from your system tray, perform the following steps:

Start regedit.exe.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Select the run value you want to remove (e.g., Microsoft IntelliType).
Click Del.
Close regedit.

hope it helps maybe

thanks for the find but I cannot see any reason that this could help anything. It basically stops the program running :(

I need the program to do everything it does but just disappear from the system tray.

what real advantage does removing the icon gonna give you anyway??

unless you want to run a program in a kinda stealth mode !!

I have wondered this too, If the Icon is hidden in the taskbar then what damage is it really doing? Also It provides quick access back into the program after you have minimised it, when you want to check your downloads status etc..saving you going through the program files or any other more long-winded shortcut you have.

It's not even using any graphics memory to be displayed (lol not really significant..just trying to justify this point:D)

everyone has their own needs. I need to remove the icon from the tray. thanks for that information microchipper.
