Removing RAM when the power is turned on

Hi, I was trying to replace my old RAMs with the new ones. I removed the old RAM when the power was still on. When i replaced the RAM and rebooted the computer, my desktop didn't respond. It just died on me, seems like. Any help ?

Does it work with the old RAM still if you plug it back in?

If so you might just have some bad RAM may want to RMA it... What kind is it?

I did that with my old comp once just plugged back it and restarted it worked fine.

really you should not do this, as you should alway's remove parts inside a computer when the power is turned off!!

if you suspect the ram is faulty you could download http://www.memtest.org/download/4.00/memtest86+-4.00.iso.zip and burn to cd and reboot computer to test your ram

Ahh also what motherboard and ram you got they might just not be compatible.

Bogas thread. Why would you think to take your memory out with the computer running? Come on, would you change your spark plugs with your car running? Think I might try putting air in my tires while my friend drives it down the road.

I've heard of people swapping RAM while the computer was still on - usually on a *nix server so they wouldn't have any downtime. I've never actually done it, but I imagine it would work if you did one stick at a time. Actually, you can install most hardware while the computer is still running. I certainly do not recommend it but it can be done.

You need to make sure the RAM you have is compatible and that it is properly seated. If that doesn't get it, then try the old RAM. Post back and let us know.

I smell a troll... It's obvious isn't it? Anyone with knowledge of how to change RAM would knw that you have to turn the power off first...

With only one post and an obnoxious username, yeah. I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to do something like that.

This is something I do every day (by accident of course), but then I usually have 10 baseunits on the desk at once, all running data wiping software and being re-built... means it is an easy mistake to make.... however, I can say that I've yet to see memory removal kill a machine totally if done with the power on. It does however have a habit of frying the memor stick!
