Removing secondary (slave) hard drive

I want to remove the secondary Western Digital hard drive and use it as an external HD that I can transport and use on different computers. I have the 'enclosure' with all the usb and 1394 cords. I need to know how to 'clean' it - should I 'format' it? There's nothing on it I want to keep.
Also, when I remove it from my old backup pc what do I need to do to remove it from the system. The pc wouldn't boot when I tried removing it - it wanted to read 'drive D' which is now a cd-rom. The slave hard drive does not have the os on it, it was just used for personal records.

just format it if you dont want to keep anything yes.. :) also, if you just remove the HD from the pc, there shouldnt be a problem, since its a slave drive :o

Okay, I thought just formatting would be okay.

The PC won't boot up the operating system when I remove the slave drive - it wants a boot disk then press enter - I've tried several boots I have, none work. I thought maybe the cable end needed to be plugged into the master drive, but that didn't work. I checked the jumpers and their right. I wonder if there is a way to remove the slave hd from 'drive D' before I actually remove it from the machine. Or maybe something to change in the configuration setups?? The only thing I'm doing is unplugging the slave drive from the daisy chain cable, and daisy chain power supply.
