a while ago i installed half life 2 and counterstrike. i no longer use either of them and wanted them gone. i dont know how to uninstall them because they dont appear in add/remove programs. i have several folders full of unwanted crap for the games, could i just delete everything? or is there a better way to remove it all completly.

When you first put the game's cd in the menu that appears has an uninstall option there. Once the games are removed with the installer seen there you simply right click on each game's folder to send to it the recycle bin.
Along with HL2 and Counter Strike alike you also have the option to download other addons and free tryouts on other games. You may want a last look before totally removing everything. But the method above will see both of the games removed.

or you can do it manual Start->Run ->type regedit and now you can edit your registry.Search for your invalid software key in Software
It might not be a great idea, but it would work. Look in the program files folder of each game, and see if their is an Uninst.exe or Uninstall.exe file. If so, running that should work. If not, then just delete the folders, icons, and start menu items, and they should be totally gone.well probelm is i dont have the cd anymore. if i just go in and delete the folders, would that work or cause problems?
To manually remove HL2 as well as the Steam game engine through Windows Explorer you go to "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\" where you will find the "unwise.exe" file along with two removers for HL2 and Steam. Those would be the unistall_hl2.exe and for Steam the uninstall_steam.exe files there. You should see the similar uninstall_cs.exe file in the correct folder.
After you run the uninstallers the folders can be simply right clicked on to send them on their way to the recycle bin. The uninstallers generally clean up the registy values the installer originally creates. But it never hurts to run a registry cleaner to remove other types of unattached values(orphans) created by other programs previously removed.
A good freeware for that is RegCleaner that works and can be found along with several other freewares and sharewares at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html
