removing windows messenger

I have never, in my life, used this program. Yet it is always loaded and ready, and probably uses more memory than I want. I can't even seem to remove it from the start menu. I did a quick search and found a few references on how remove it.

My questionis; is it safe to remove windows messenger (the instant messaging one) from my computer completely and is it not too difficult to do?

If it is safe to do I can figure out how to do it by searching, but if anyhas a good link/procedure let me know.

Thanks.

ive removed it from the start up options using msconfig and also removed it from the windows components section of add/remove programs. It'll always come back because msn messenger uses it. However, the process i described will stop showing in the task bar which is the important part :P

yea... the same thing happens with other software like AIM... i get an "AOL explorer" to pop up. i just disable such stuff in msconfig, and then look for the shortcuts targets to delete it off the hard drive. what really gets me though is when the target is a website and you cant delete it. that used to happen when my brother would use my dads computer to do online games.. that type of thing is mostly spyware though.

After you have removed MSmessenger in Add/Remove Programs, after you have stopped the process etc, it is still running. Go to www.whatsrunning.net and have a look at what is really running. One of them is MS Messenger. I too thought I had killed it but it is still there.

Depending on your Os, assuming windows, the removing process can be different.

But to answer you question, yes you are completely safe from removing it from starting up and what not. When you want to use it, you can just run it from it's source folder.

However, if you want to remove it permanently.. make sure you just dont do the msconfig step and that's it, that just removes it from starting up. If Add/Remove doesn't work, you might have to do it from your registry.

If the listed procedure and what you researched for doesn't work, post back and let me/us know.

well heres a total removal way, go to the administrator settings in the conrol pannel\performance and matinance, look for messenger, righ click and go to properties, where it says automatic, disabled, manual, clck disable then click stop service. then you can go to the c:\programFiles and delete the messenger folder from there,

and your done
