Repair Install?

My friend asked me to fix his computer, and the message is "root system 32 missing. Windows can't start" or something like that. Anyway, someone suggested using the repair install function of the win xp boot cd. But I thought that only imported a fresh registry, nothing else. What does it do??

there's a file missing in the folder "system32" you can either boot of the cd and repair yes that will work, but faster is to use the recovery console, expand the cd and copy the file from the cd to the directory.
