Repair XP User Account

Hi, im new here, my names James

I have a friend with XP pro, and she is having problems with user accounts.
It seems her user account has become corrupt. At the startup, is says her account cannot be loaded because the profile is damaged.

I have been told to repair it, I can just copy her files into a new profile - and she can use that one. But, the Users section in the control panel will not load-up - so i cannot create a new account for her.

Any shortcuts I put on the desktop etc disappear on re-start, because there is no profile for them to be allocated to!

On trying to repair windows, it says my version (cd) is older than the original - so it wont allow me to do it.

What can I do please? I want to get her a desktop that doesnt re-set after a re-start each time. The only profile to choose from at start-up is hers - there is no guest option.

Thanks

boot into Safe mode, then try creating a new account for her and moving all of her desktop icons to it then deleting the old account

I bloody knew that too! Thanks, it sometimes takes an outside view to find (remember) the solution.

Pressing DEL during startup will give me the option to boot in safe mode wont it?

Didnt work. Even in safe mode it doesnt open - the box appears, with nothing in it - then it goes about half a second later.

I need another way of creating a user account

can you get into her account at all?

if so,

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name the new value Administrator
Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as its Value data
Close the registry editor

restart the computer and the admin account should show up now. go to c:/documents/"her name or account name"/ then find the files you want, try using that to get her files.
