Repairing vista - no repair option from disc

Hi guys, I'm trying to repair my brother's vista install, it just BSOD's on boot (even safe mode) and there is no launch startup repair option in the boot menu for vista. So we've got a vista disc, normally you boot from it, select language, and click repair in the bottom left. The problem is that it's not there, or more accurately the disc is skipping straight from language selection to partition selection, so I can't access the repair options. How do I fix this? Clean install is a no go as of yet as all of his data is still on the drive.

you can take his harddrive and add it as a slave in another computer
remove his data
put harddrive back in his computer
then format and load windows

STOP!!! Don't do anything until you scan the drive for errors with the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic software, use the dos version of the software not the windows version. Create the dos version bootable cd and boot to it.

This procedure usually finds the errors and the OS will boot again.

It's alright, it was because he hadn't installed SP2 (he had SP1) and I made a disc with SP2 slipstreamed onto it. We ended up just copying his data to my PC and transferring it over the network after we installed windows 7 64 bit to his PC (to his reluctance, I don't get why he likes vista so much)
