    Hi,
I have an HP m7650n which has an e6300 (1.8 ghz) cpu. I'd like to overclock it, but it seems like the board (An Asus P5BW-LA-00) is locked (because the bios area for modifying the CPU is greyed out). I just came across an e8400 core 2 duo, and was wondering if popping this baby into my board will work, and if so, will it be faster?
    Thanks,
    ...... john

That pc doesn't support the 8400. You are using the best cpu for that model right now. You would need to get a newer machine to get anything faster.

    Hi John,
    I was afraid of that.
    Thanks for help.

You should be able to throw a E6600 or E6700 in there for a step up in frequency.

But as per john the G965/P965 chipset of that board only supports up to the e6xx series. There's plenty of E6600 on ebay for like $5 shipped.

And an E6600 should run faster?

It should marginally run faster. They're clocked higher. I mean for $5... it's not a bad investment.

What is the full spec of your PC?
    Have you got SSD yet?
    How much RAM?
    What OS you are running?

Also, there is a modified BIOS v3.17 for that MB. (google it yourself)
You could run CPU like Q6600, Q6700 after flashing it.

    Hi Intel_man,
It's not the cost. I avoid buying on line, so I would have to find it somewhere else.
    Hi Cisco,
Yes, I have an SSD, and 3gigs of ram.
    I'm running Windows 10.
My bios is version 3.16 (I'm not sure if going to 3.17 would help?)
The only other difference (aside from the SSD) from the original setup is
the addition of a GeForce 8600.

I don't think the upgrade is worth the trouble even if it were free, only very little improvements to be had and it will still be slow and outdated by todays standards, maybe if you could get a q6700 or q6600 for almost nothing and only if you are a light user then maybe it might be worth it. Personally I enjoy messing with old hardware and old computers, so I would do things like this and do some OCing etc, but it you want a reliable daily use PC then I would consider going in a different direction.

Nothing wrong with buying online, just stick to reputable sites and use a little common sense and you should be fine. On sites like ebay there is a lot of protection for buyers, maybe more than sellers have, so if you have any problems its usually easy to get your money back. Over the last 10 years I have bought over 1000 items of ebay and am yet to have any serious problems.

    Hi Shlouski,
I think I'll see if I can find a q6700 or q6600, assuming the P5BW will recognize it. I only use the thing for surfing, emails, and the occasional YouTube video. I too like messing around with 'legacy';) hardware. Before I got this computer I was using XP (I love XP) in a p4pe2-x, 2gigs of ram, and a Radeon 9800XT franky. It has a 2.6 GHz cpu, but has trouble handling videos. The Windows 10 system will just do it, but it wouldn't until I added the GeForce.
Thank you all for your help.

    Your PC support 4 x 2GB RAM.
I guess more RAM could help if you can find DDR2 RAM really cheap.

    Hi Cisco,
Yes. I found another gig piece, so I'm up to 3.5 now.
The system seems to be alright for now. I stopped some things from running, and did a little house cleaning. I bought this thing second hand, and it doesn't appear that anyone did anything but run it, so we'll see how it works.
Thank you all for your help.

    Hi Shinnen

The limit is the 65W C2D 65nm conroe architecture on the LGA775 with the 965 chipset. You almost certainly can use the same 1066 FSB Xeon part being the Xeon 3070 which is exactly the same architecture, voltage, package, FSB clock etc. Should work fine. If you can get one cheap, id try that because it gives you a significant bump in clock speed without changing TDP.

Given that you're new to the system, id also clean and repalce thermal paste on the chipsets and CPU while you're at it. Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers etc and refresh install of Windows.

    Hi Okedokey,
(I haven't heard that expression for a long time.)
There are lots of cheap Xeons on Kijiji, which is my goto source for used stuff, but none of them are 3070. I have updated the drivers and changed the paste, etc.
I'll keep an eye out for a 3070.
Thanks for the help, and suggestions.

    Hi,
    I've located a Q6600 for $10.
Just to refresh everyone's memory, I currently have an HP m7650n which has an e6300 cpu.
Is it the consensus that the Q6600 will work in my system and provide a noticeable
    improvement in performance?
    Thanks,
