Replacement motherboard costs, alternatives?

Hi,
I would be really grateful if anyone could help me. I have a two year old Dell Inspiron 15R which is not turning on. The light on the charger will turn on when plugged into a power source, but as soon as it is plugged into the laptop it turns off again, and therefore the laptop will not charge. I have been told this is a relatively common issue with Dells, and it either has something to do with the motherboard or the power socket. I have been quoted £250 for the repair by Dell, yet a local repairman has quoted me £70. Why is there such a difference in the price - are either to be trusted? Also, I probably cannot afford a new laptop, but will it be a waste of money to repair it, or will I just have to accept the fact that I'm going to need to buy a new one?
Thank you for your time

Wow 250 Sterling pounds is INSANE. Yes local repairmen , at least in the USA can be trusted. Dell overcharges everything. They just quoted me a 9 cell battery for 200 dollars which I got online for 70. Ask around and see if the local repairman can be trusted.

As for your issue... do you have another PSU you could try? I doubt its the power supply but just to rule it out. Dont pay the 250, you could get an asus for 2x that price.

The local repairman. Just make sure you get a guarantee thats whats wrong. If its not, the price will be deducted from the real repair. And make sure they call before making any other repairs.
