okay, i have a new gpu, the gtx285; the question is, whats the best way to replace the current gpu i have now w/ the new one?

Turn the computer off , open the case, unplug the old card, take it out, put the new card in, plug in the pci-express power connector, close up the case, power up, install drivers, restart, enjoy.

Before you do that... Right click my computer, properties, device manager, right click on your gpu and hit "uninstall" and check the "delete device drivers from this computer" box. Then you can turn off/install the card. When you install the drivers, go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest video card drivers for your operating system;)

Is there really a need to uninstall the driver when it's the same for both cards?

Well, i personally would as the GTX285 needs the GTX285 driver vs the GTX260 driver... Thats why in device manager it would say "Nvidia Geforce ______".

When you go to nVidia, you'll get the same driver listed for both cards.

The Device Manager knows what card is in the slot. It's not identifying the
card by the driver.
