Replacing Acer hard drive.

How do I know what hard drive to use when replacing one in my wife's laptop. I don't have the model of computer with me but the drive is a Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00. I usually get my stuff at either Newegg or TigerDirect.

That Hitachi drive is a 2.5", 5400rpm, 160G SATA drive. Do you want a more or less exact replacement or do you want to upgrade it? As long as you make sure you get a 2.5" SATA drive you should be OK. If you want a little better performance try a 7200rpm drive (battery up time may take a hit) or if you want more space try a 300G or bigger. How much you want to spend is a major factor as well. I wouldn't spend the extra money to get a 6.0G/s drive since your original is a 1.5G/s drive (transfer speed).

Here's one that is pretty close to your original with a little more storage space for $59: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136799

Thank you. I am not looking to get fancy. Computer is about 6 years old so I am not putting a lot of money into it. That WD should do the trick.

Ok, I finally have a chance to replace the hard drive. It is in the computer. I put the recovery disc and started the computer. It started to load then a message box came up that said wrong type or something like that. It stopped loading. Now all I get when I start the computer is, missing operating system. I tried changing the boot sequence to the dvd drive. Still the same thing.

If I'm not mistaken, I had this same issue when I had to replace a hdd on an acer. If I remember correctly, I had to create a partition on the drive first before the recovery cd would do anything with it.

I had to do the same thing. A couple months back I sold my Acer laptop. Before selling it I did a DBAN on it then ran the recovery CD. I got this exact same issue until I made a partition (I used a linux live cd with gparted). After that the rescue cd worked as you would expect.

I finally had time to get back to the laptop. The partition seemed to work. Now I get an error. BOOTMGR is missing. Press ctr alt del to restart.

Did you boot to the recovery disk? Just because the CD is in the drive doesn't mean it will boot to it.
