Replacing cpu

Is this easy? I am really new to upgrading anything on a comp. Im not looking for anything special, but my mom is giving me a 2001 gateway(its got a floppy drive :( ) I think its about 512 mb (i will upgrade to maybe 2 gig, good idea?). Will i ned to upgrade the motherboard? Im mostly using it for movies/music. mAybe a little bit of gaming. But nothing fancy. Any help is greatly appreciated

It's doubtful that your motherboard will support 2GB of RAM. Also, since the computer was made in 2001, the processor is extremely out dated and you won't find anything thats really worth the upgrade.

If I were you, I would just keep it and upgrade the RAM to the max it supports (most likely around 768MB-1GB), and just save up for a completely new PC.
 
Imo just look at the sub-400 builds that get posted here every now and then, because so much has happened in those 7 years (Like the latest pentium 3) that it probably wont support anything you try to do with it.

If you did want to upgrade, try to find specs for the computer so we know what we can work with (Might have to call gateway)
 
If you have a decent budget that allows a cheap new PC, I wouldn't upgrade it. I have a 2002 Gateway with a P4 2.0Ghz & 2GB of ram but it wasn't really worth buying the extra ram for. This one will go to my mom when I start my new build (whenever the Q9450s come out) cause it handles everyday task great but will struggle doing anything intensive.
 
well, i really would like too stay away from buying a whole new comp. I might in a couple years, but i dont really need one right now. Also, if this helps, it has a vertical floppy drive and cd drive. Im away from my house so i don't know the model or anything.

whats a sub 400 build?

By that I meant a build for under 400 dollars, which I said because I wasnt sure how much money you had to spend, but if youre looking into upgrading, its probably not much.
 
Well personally i would rather build a comp, building something is funner than buying something IMO. But i would hate to start it and then mess it up.

could i atleast put a dvd burner a larger hard drive, and a video card with a s-video out? I would atleast be fine with it like that.
