Replacing motherboard?

Hello. I have a question?

How hard is it to replace a motherboard in a laptop? I am thinking about doing this with a HP Omnibook 500 laptop.

Has anyone ever replaced a motherboard in ANY computer before? Was it challenging, or frusturating?

Also, does anyone have any basic steps to follow for taking it out and putting a new one in?

Thanks

Where are you buying the motherboard from? As far as i know, its practically impossible to replace a laptop motherboard, unless your a professional.

I've replaced motherboards in desktops, and it isn't that hard, but its really time consuming.

do you mean replacing a laptop motherboard the same as replacing a desktop motherboard? if so, then not at all, as i said before, its practically impossible to replace a laptop motherboard.

yea, i too have done it in desktop. problem is unless u have a tower with a removable panel with the mobo mounted onto it, u have to take out almost everything to get the old one out and new one in, then reinstall everything. as far as laptops though....never done one of those. ill look and see if i come up with anything for ya.

Why do you say it is nearly impossible to replace a laptop motherboard?

its nearly impossible to the average user, professionals and companies such as dell, hp, compaq can easily replace them. But everything is built onto the board, so it would be pretty hard to be able to get the motherboard out of there, and then get a new one in.

Would you be able to define the average user. I feel I am on the low end of advanced in computing.

umm... its kinda hard to explain, but why do you want to replace your laptop motherboard anyway?

The reason is that the voltage converter has gone bad, and it seems as though that is on the motheboard. It is easier to replace the whole motherboard. I think. However, is it easier to just replace the voltage converter?

It is very hard to replace a laptop mobo I have replaced laptop mobos and did sodering work on them and it's a pain. To do it i find i day life size pics of it and put the screws on it so i rember where they go. In short there are a lot of screws to keep track of and it is VERY time consuming. I would not recomend it but it can be done.

here is a good tip,

If you neva replaced a motherboard, don't even worry about replacing a motherboard on a laptop. I have done it twice and it's real time consuming and takes alot of documentation skills so you can remember where everything goes.

Try replacing the motherboard on a tower first, atleast then you will have a feel for replacing motherboards.

All the components will be welded onto the board. You'd have to buy all the other parts too. If I were you I would replace the laptop instead. If your planning to replace the mobo on a pc then htats not too difficult.

It depends on the laptop. I have found on the laptops i have works with not many parts that you would need to replace where welded on to it other then the onboard ports.

Thank you to all who have replied. Despite all of the negative comments, I have ordered the motherboard, and will give it a shot. It was only twenty bucks on ebay...

Well I wish you good luck and the best advise I can give you would be to draw a life size picture of where you are on it and where all the screws are on it so when you put it back to gether you don't have to worry about it.

I also plan on taking sevral pictures of it

spend the hours you will spend replacing the mother bored, and instead work for more money, then buy a new labtop, it;'ll be alot easier.
