Replacing optical drive

Just a general question. Last week i accidently ran a blank DVD that still had the "rubber donut" (the little grey rubber thing that caps the end of DVD spindles) on the underside. Needless to say, it destroyed my optical drive, so now i'm needing to replace it.

My question is, I want to upgrade to a blu ray drive. I have a NVIDIA GT120 card (is this going to be okay to run blu ray?)

Also does anyone have any good recommendations for which drive to get? I don't need to burn blu ray or anything, just DVD. I'd like to stay in the $100 range.

How hard are optical drives to install in general?

you can do blu-ray with that card. what monitor will you be using? make sure it's also hdcp compliant. the optical drive is probably the easiest thing to replace in a computer, except for maybe ram.

I have a Gateway lx6810.

Anyway, this optical drive i currently have is acting strange. It still plays games just fine. But it won't play a DVD movie.

Additionally, whenever i put a blank disc in and open up DVD burning software, the software won't open, and while the disc is in the drive I can't even get things like browser windows to open up...

Does this sound like a typical problem or something someone has experienced?

does it play dvd games or just cd games? have you tried uninstalling your drive in device manager and letting it reinstall?
