Replacing thermal paste

So I want to replace the thermal paste on my 570 and on a 8800GTS I wanna sell.

First of all, taking apart my $350 video card scares me, so I wanna know a lot of stuff.

Can I just use isopropyl alcohol to take off the old paste like I do with CPUs? And would it hurt anything around the CPU if I spill some on other parts?

Can I spread it with the heatsink or do I have to spread it with a credit card?

And lastly, how tight do I screw on the heatsink after I'm done?

Get yourself some Arcti-Clean, it does a better job than straight isoprop because it has an emulsifier in it (breaks down the paste)

Don't spread it with anything but the heatsink.

Screw the heatsink on evenly like you would a car wheel. Two diagonal screws first, then the other two, then tighten.

You can use alcohol, but the Arcti-Clean just does a much better job.

Question: How much thermal paste do I put on? The chip is just about 6 centimeters diagonally.

A little less than you would on a CPU - so slightly small er than a pea should be sufficient.

Okay, maybe slightly more. As much as you feel is acceptable; just don't overdo it.

Yeah, in-game it got to about 65c, which I've seen before, but usually it only gets to 61c. Hopefully it'll get better.
